A look into the test laboratory for welding technology: double test rig

As an in-house research and development laboratory at ABICOR BINZEL, the ARCLab is a facility that many welding technology companies would certainly like to have. Measurements, analyzes and tests are carried out on around 100 test systems in an area of approx. 1200 m² here at the Buseck site. One of these test systems is the double test rig.

Comparative welds, Schlieren interferometry, etc.

On the one hand, this double test rig is used to compare our own welding torches with those of our competitors. What is unique about this double test rig is that two welding torches can weld at the same time with absolutely identical welding parameters –for up to eight hours! A simultaneously running milling technology makes this possible.

What is really exciting, however, is that measuring technology can also be used on this double test rig. This includes a high-speed camera, thermocouples, fast measurement data acquisition and so-called Schlieren interferometry. The latter visualises the protective gas flow and shows, for example, turbulence, insufficient protective gas coverage or the extraction capacity of fume extraction torches.
